Seven dead, 17 injured in massive, hours-long fight in South Carolina prison

A massive fight that lasted for hours in a South Carolina prison has finally been brought under control but not before seven prisoners died and 17 others were injured.

Authorities say at least six emergency services responded to the “mass casualty incident” at Lee Correctional Institution in Lee County South Carolina, one of the state's toughest maximum security prisons.

The state's department of corrections did not immediately say why the brawling took so long to bring under control, but noted that all of the guards and prison staff is reportedly safe and uninjured.

The death count of seven is the most in a South Carolina prison incident in recent history, although the facility has seen trouble before; just a few weeks ago prisoners there took a staff member hostage and briefly took control of one of the dorms.
