Philippine President orders soldiers to shoot female rebels in the vagina

President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines is encouraging members of his country's armed forces to shoot female rebels in their genitals. The remarks were delivered last week while addressing a group of reformed communist rebels.

“Tell the soldiers, ‘There’s a new order coming from the mayor,’ said Duterte referencing his previous position as mayor of Davao City. “‘We will not kill you. We will just shoot you in the vagina.’”

He also implied women are useless without their genitals. Initially, the remarks weren't widely reported because Duterte was speaking in his native Visayan language. The Presidential Communications Office included the comments in the official transcript of the event, but replaced the word "vagina" with a dash. The transcript also notes the audience laughed. As news of the remarks began to circulate, criticism has been fierce from feminist and human rights groups.

Duterte has a record of using misogynist language and crude humor to threaten women. He's also known for operating with violence and strong-arm tactics. The president came into power promising to kill the country's drug users and dealers. Thousands of Filipinos have since been shot dead, prompting the international criminal court to open a preliminary examination.
