According to The Guardian, Ecuador has spent more than $5M since 2012 to securely host Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and accommodate his needs, an expense approved by the president of Ecuador.
But it doesn't seem Assange felt too grateful. When he had the chance he hacked into the embassy's internal computer network, providing himself with additional Internet endpoints and collecting internal communications of embassy employees. In 2014, an external security firm notified the embassy of Assange's breach.
It is unclear if the revelations of the hack have anything to do with recent news about Ecuador considering the extradition of Assange to the UK.
